Officials Recognition

BCSSA proudly recognizes and celebrates the achievements and contribution of our officials/volunteers, through in-house awards, nominations to external awards and other recognition programs.

BC Speed Skating Official/Volunteer Awards

Ritha Johnson Official of the Year Award

This award recognizes the long term contribution of Ritha Johnson to our sport and was first awarded in 2012. The award was formerly known as the BCSSA Official of the Year Award.

  • Nomination process: the BCSSA ODC will select an award winner at the completion of each season. The awards will be presented annually at the BCSSA AGM.
  • Previous award winners: Ted Houghton ( 2016), Ariadne Holness de Hiller (2015), Dee-Ann Stickel (2014), Stuart Gibbs (2013), Doug Wright (2012), Stuart Gibbs (2011), Trish Archibald (2010).
Volunteer of the Year Award

Introduced in 1991 this award recognizes contributions of volunteers in the Association.

  • Nomination process: club executives and/or members of the BCSSA Board of Directors may nominate nominees. Nominations are accepted via online form until May 1, 2016. Awards will be presented annually at the AGM.

Youth Volunteer of the Year Award
  • Nomination process: club executives and/or members of the BCSSA Board of Directors may nominate nominees. Nominations are accepted via online form until May 1, 2016. Awards will be presented annually at the AGM..

External Awards

Speed Skating Canada Renee Marleau Official of the Year Award

This award is presented to any SSC Official who has demonstrated long term involvement in the sport.

  • Nomination process: any BCSSA member may nominate a nominee following the Speed Skating Canada nomination process. Nominations should be submitted to the BCSSA Awards Committee, who will select one nominee from the province to submit to SSC.
  • Previous BCSSA award winners: Stuart Gibbs (2013), Ritha Johnson (2006), Gary Roberts (2003).
Speed Skating Canada Officials Award of Excellence

This award is presented to an individual was has made a meaningful contribution to officiating, including the development of Officials within the sport.

  • Nomination process: any BCSSA member may nominate a nominee following the Speed Skating Canada nomination process. Nominations should be submitted to the BCSSA Awards Committee, who will select one nominee from the province to submit to SSC.
  • Previous BCSSA award winners: Ariadne Holness de Hiller (2015), Darlene Chapman (2009).
Sport BC President’s Award

This award is presented by Sport BC to a volunteer who represents the spirit of volunteerism.

  • Nomination process: the BCSSA President completes the Sport BC nomination form and submits directly to Sport BC.
  • Previous BCSSA award winners:  Lorna Holbech (2016), Bruce Wenting (2014), Jim Hume (2013), Ariadne Holness de Hiller (2012), Anne Pousette (2011).
Community Sport Hero Awards

This award recognizes those who contribute to community sport at the amateur level.

  • Nomination process: select communities are eligible to nominate nominees directly through the Teck Community Sport Hero Awards nomination form. Other communities host independent Community Sport Hero Award receptions- contact your local Parks & Recreation Department for more information.

Recognition Programs

BCSSA Junior Officials Program

The Junior Officials Program recognizes Junior Officials who contribute to their club and who are progressing towards Officials certification. This program is administered by the club and recognition includes certificates at each stage and pins at select stages (available from the BCSSA Office).
