Coaches Recognition

BCSSA proudly recognizes and celebrates the achievements and contribution of our coaches, through in-house awards, nominations to external awards and other recognition programs.

BC Speed Skating Coach Awards

Coach of the Year Award
  • Nomination process: club executives and/or members of the BCSSA Board of Directors may nominate nominees. Nominations are accepted via online form until May 1, 2016. The award will be presented annually at the BCSSA AGM.
  • Previous award winners: Ariana VanDerStarre (2015), Adam Ingle (2014), Erik Norlander (2013), Lucy Lee (2012), Dave Shields (2011), Christina Acton (2010).

External Awards

Coaches BC Coach of the Year Award

This award recognizes coaches who are effective, have contributed to sport, demonstrated leadership, and advanced their personal development. Three sub-categories of awards are available: Recreational/Grassroots, Regional/Provincial Development and International.

  • Nomination process: any BCSSA member may nominate a nominee following the Coaches BC nomination process. Please notify the BCSSA Awards Committee of any submissions.
  • Previous BCSSA award winners: George Donatelli (Regional/Provincial Development 2011), Karen McLaren (Recreational/Grassroots 2008), Keith Gordon (Regional/Provincial Development 2011).
Speed Skating Canada Coach of the Year Award

This award recognizes NCCP Level III and above coaches who have made significant, long-term contributions to highly achieving skaters.

  • Nomination process: any BCSSA member may nominate a nominee following the Speed Skating Canada nomination process. Nominations should be submitted to the BCSSA Awards Committee, who will select one nominee from the province to submit to SSC.
  • Previous BCSSA award winners: Sandi Vyse-Lloyd (2001), Dalphena Snively (2000), Bette Roberts (1997).
Speed Skating Canada Coaches Awards of Excellence

This award recognizes coaches who have made a significant contribution at the local, provincial or national level.

  • Nomination process: any BCSSA member may nominate a nominee following the Speed Skating Canada nomination process. Nominations should be submitted to the BCSSA Awards Committee, who will select one nominee from the province to submit to SSC.
  • Previous BCSSA award winners: George Donatelli (2012), Keith Gordon (2009), Bette Roberts (2008).
Coaching Association of Canada Geoff Gowan Award

This award recognizes a lifetime contribution to coaching development.

  • Nomination process: please consult directly with the BCSSA Awards Committee.
  • Previous BCSSA award winners: n/a.

Recognition Programs

BCSSA Junior Coaching Program

The Junior Coaching Program recognizes Junior Coaches who contribute to their club but who have not yet received formal NCCP training. This program is administered by the club and recognition includes certificates at each stage and pins at select stages (available from the BCSSA Office).

Coaching External Graduation Credits

Junior Coaches (in high school) may also be eligible for external credits (Coach 11). Any questions regarding Coach 11 can be directed to bcssa.coaching@nullgmail.com.
